What is therapy?

Therapy is the process of sharing thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors with a trained professional.

How does it help?

A therapist can help untangle and challenge different thoughts and beliefs people have about themselves, along with helping individuals identify and name their emotions, and increase awareness about how this may play out in certain behaviors.  A therapist can help you identify your goals for therapy and talk with you about your expectations.

What does a first session look like?

When I first meet with a client, I like to learn about who you are and any history you are comfortable sharing. Then of course, I want to know what brings you to therapy and what your expectations of therapy are (what do you hope will change?).

I often like to provide some psycho-education on what I think might be a helpful approach to addressing your presenting concerns and checking with you if this approach matches with your goals.

My Approach

In my work as a therapist I have witnessed that when people find a space where they feel safe to share their experiences and connect their thoughts, feelings and behaviors - they can better understand what they need and how to move through difficulties. I provide a space where people can be seen, heard and understood in these painful experiences. I implement tools such as mindfulness and body awareness as strategies to regulate difficult emotions.

Some of the lenses which inform my work with clients, are Neuroscience, Trauma Informed, and Attachment based  - which believes our brains are often shaped by our experiences. We can carry wounds that influence how we perceive the world and how we relate to people close to us in the present day. Some treatment approaches that I have experience with are Emotion Focused Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
